The Sierra Madre Rotary Club welcomes Megan Lakey (History Teacher at Arcadia High) and The Constitution Team as the guest speakers to its weekly meeting, which is  scheduled for Tuesday, March 15 at 7:00 a.m. at the Hart Park House, 222 W. Seirra Madre Blvd, Sierra Madre, CA 91024.

This elite team is  made of 30 seniors that went through a vigorous application process. They have been working since last summer. The competition is under the jurisdiction of the Center for Civic Education. This is the 6th time in 28 years that AHS has won the California State title. They will be representing the state at the Nationals Finals in late April in Washington DC.  and are raising money towards this trip to the National Finals. Students include Matt Hatfield, Hafsah Umerani, Hanah Lee, Jenny Shi, Michael Chien, Briana Shen, Katie Chiou, Sydney Cheung. They will give an overview of team and what they study.

Wistaria Tri-Tip Roasts

We are pre-selling our Tri-tip Roasts. Please order now and we will have it ready for pick up. You can order until Saturday at 5 pm. They are $25.00 each and are marinated in the wonderful Rotary Rub. You can email: Peggybeau@gmail.com or post on FB. Bring your check or cash.

The Sierra Madre Rotary Club welcomes Mayor John Capocia as the Guest Speaker to its weekly meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1 at 7.00 a.m. at Hart Park House, 222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd, Sierra Madre, CA 91024.

Mayor John will be giving us his State of the Union address and come learn more about the issues facing our great City. He was elected to the City Council in 2012. He has served on the Park and Recreation Commission (now Community Services Commission), and has volunteered on the General Plan Steering and Youth Master Plan committees, served on the Little League Board of Directors, and as President of the Pony Baseball League. Most recently he was Board Member of the Sierra Madre Community Foundation.

John and his wife Marta moved to their Sierra Madre home on West Highland Avenue in 1983 where they’ve raised their three children Lauren, Joseph, and Susan.

Kris

The Sierra Madre Rotary Club welcomes Dr. Kris Zacny as the Guest Speaker to its weekly meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, February 23rd at Hart Park House, 222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA 91024 at 7.00 a.m.

Dr. Kris focuses on robotic space drilling, sample acquisition, transfer and processing technologies, as well as geotechnical systems for mining applications. Previously, Dr. Zacny managed mining projects and production in South Africa. Dr. Zacny earned a Ph.D. in Mars drilling and an ME in Petroleum Engineering from University of California, Berkeley, as well as a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Cape Town. Dr Zacny has over 100 publications, including an edited book, “Drilling in Extreme Environments: Penetration and Sampling on Earth and Other Planets.” He has been a Principal and Co-Investigator of over 50 NASA and Department of Defense funded projects and participated in drilling expeditions in Antarctica, the Atacama Desert, Mauna Kea, the Mojave Desert and the Arctic. Dr. Zacny has over 15 NASA New Technology Records and three NASA Group Achievement Awards.

The Rotary Club of Sierra Madre invites the guest speaker Ms. Estelle Campbell, Managing Director of the Sierra Madre Playhouse to the weekly meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 7.00 a.m. She along with Diane Siegel, the Curator of Lobby Exhibits and Special Events, will tell us more about Sierra Made Playhouse and current and future theater productions coming in 2016. We are very fortunate to have a such vibrant theatre in our home town so please bring a friend along tomorrow morning and come learn more about our “treasure” of a Playhouse. Just a quick Heads up to all that SMPH is concluded their penultimate weekend with Deathtrap and they have been sold-out. That leaves just the last three performances (Friday, Feb 19 and Saturday matinee & evening, Feb 20) for those of you who haven’t seen the show and still want to.

The Rotary Club of Sierra Madre welcomes the internationally renowned Climatologist William Patzert as the Guest Speaker on Tuesday, Februaary 9, 2016 at 7.00 a.m. He is often called the “Prophet of California climate.” Patzert is a scientist at the California Institute of Technology’s NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. His expertise is the Oceans, El Nino and La Nina, General Weather and Climate.

His research is focused on the application of NASA satellite data to improving our understanding of our planet’s climate and important environmental problems ranging from developing El Niño, La Niña and longer-term climate forecasts to monitoring the health of coral reefs. The author of many scientific and popular articles, Bill works with undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world, and lectures at many local universities. A media favorite, he is often sought out by reporters and is regularly seen on local and national television representing NASA and JPL. In a recent article, he was named as one of the West’s most influential individuals in dealing with water issues.

Sierra Madre School

The Sierra Madre Rotary Club will be taking a field trip to Sierra Madre School at 160 N Canon Avenue on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, and the weekly meeting will be held there at 7:00am sharp. The Guest Speaker will be Principal Garrett Newsome and staff. They will tell all about the state of the art school, and also will get a grand tour of the facility which is one of the newest schools in the San Gabriel Valley area.
